Idioms

What’s an idiom? It’s an expression whose meaning has become common, but can’t be discovered from the particular words themselves. British English is full of idioms, but other varieties of English (Australian, American, South African) also have their own. Here’s some typical British idioms. How many do you know?

  • Hit the books

  • Face the music

  • Not my cup of tea
